Control the flow of fluids:
Glass laboratory components are vital for controlling the flow of liquids or fluids within your set-up. For example, stoppers can be useful in processes such as chromatography. You can also control the flow by using connector glass, such as tubing, t-connectors, or other forms of adapters. Coupled with a valve, you can precisely control the movement of liquids in your system.
Glass can create air-tight seals.
Contrary to popular opinion, glass makes an excellent choice for creating an airtight seal with joints. With proper joint sizing, a small amount of high vacuum grease can create an air-tight seal that’s capable of withstanding deep vacuum without deformation or breakage. This feature is key for processes that involve a vacuum of any kind. Always remember to use Keck Clips when connecting glass joints to ensure that they stay connected and won’t accidentally come apart.
Connect scientific glassware with flexible tubing.
A barbed hosing adapter coupled with flexible tubing (such as the one offered by Versilon) can help you connect disparate pieces together. Simple valves (or stopcocks) can easily and precisely control the flow in your system. These valves can be made of plastic, glass, or any other material.
Glass helps you accurately measure volume in your lab.
If you recall your first chemistry class, you’ll remember that glass is an excellent choice for volumetric measurements that require high precision. While accurate measurement is useful for all laboratories, it’s especially significant in testing labs and the like. The degree of accuracy in measurement of any component is referred to as its metrological grade.
Cleaning without degradation.
Unlike plastic or metal which can degrade with cleaning or repeated use, a key advantage of glass is its general ability to be effectively cleaned. It can either be soaked in a liquid bath with detergents or other cleaners, or if the glass is tough enough, it can withstand sonication. Once cleaned, it can be re-used again and again.
